The next morning, I get up with the sunrise. No one else is awake; the guys decided to sleep in, but I’m determined to soak in every moment I can. I sit in one of the chairs with my journal, watching the waves through the chain-link fence. Ever since I started my Photogram account, I haven’t been writing in my journal as much, and I feel the need to ground myself a bit. I’m about to start writing when I hear the trailer door open behind me.

I turn to see Jacob walking down the steps. “Hey, there,” he says.

I smile widely. “Good morning.”

“Wanna go down to the beach? This view could be much better.”

“Really?”

He nods. “Really. I’ll even carry the chairs down for us.”

I grab my journal and follow him down the thousand steps to the beach.

He sets up the chairs right by the shoreline, then notices what I’m holding. “Is that your journal?”

I nod, a tiny bit embarrassed but also glad that I can share this part of myself with him. “I was going to write about this weekend.”

He pulls me by the waist and gives me a sweet, quick kiss. “I love that. I’ll play a game on my phone so you can write.”

I beam. Weird as it sounds, I love the idea that we can sit together without talking, but comfortable and secure in each other’s company.

I work on a drawing of our kiss at the beach the morning before and write a little bit about us. In ten years, I’ll probably cringe at all the things I’m writing about our first kiss and the way he makes me feel, but I’m giddy like a teenager right now. I glance over at him, his handsome face marked with stubble, his curly hair unkempt, and my heart fills with joy.

He must feel my attention on him, because he looks over just then. “What’s up?”

I shrug. “Nothing. Just happy to be here with you.”

That puts a huge smile on his face. He turns off his phone and holds his hand out to me, and I put my hand in his. We lean back in our chairs and watch the waves, content to just be.
